Gary Ross (screenplay), Suzanne CollinsStory Link: Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to compete. If you've read the Hunger Games books, you know that the story of Katniss and her experience at the Hunger Games is brutal and deeply disturbing. The movie captures the book well. Exciting, intriguing and thought provoking are good words to describe the movie, but would be overshadowed by descriptions like horrifically violent and heartrendingly sad.
Numerous scenes in this movie depict teens killing each other in various ways with weapons, their bare hands, and other means. Blood is shown, as are the terrorized faces of the killers and the killed. Bonds are formed and brutally broken. Both ruthlessness and honor are displayed.
