Story of The Movie :   After twenty years in prison, Foley is finished with the grifter's life. When he meets an elusive young woman named Iris, the possibility of a new start looks real. But his past is proving to be a stubborn companion.
Viewer's  Opinion :     Well, sometimes, flicking through the backwaters of Lovefilm Instant can throw up a very surprisingly good film.
It's a typical "con" film in many ways; Samuel L Jackson has just gotten out of prison, his old partner-in-crime's son (who Sam L killed) blackmails him (in a very twisted way, I won't spoil it) into pulling one last con with him. It, of course, goes slightly awry.
It's not any different to the same basic story that's been retold a 100 times before, but considering it has been done on a very low budget, it's actually a decent, well made, impressive little film.
Everyone's well cast, there's a few big names in it (or at least recognisable faces) but Jackson puts.
A tense taunt noir thriller with Sam Jackson bringing all his usual gravitas to a more complex role then he's had in a while. It does fall apart in the last 15 minutes, but for the most part it's an emotionally engaging film, with Toronto like I've never seen it before .
Remember when Samuel L. Jackson used to act? Wayyyy back before he became a motherf**kin’ parody of himself? I do, and I was hoping that The Samaritan would give him a chance to do it again … and it did, sort of.
Samuel’s character, Foley, is fresh out of prison from a 25-year stint for shooting his best friend (and grifting partner) in the head. He’s not out for very long (like, a day) before his dead partner’s son Ethan tries to pull him back into some bad stuff by offering him a partnership in a new Grift—the Samaritan—which will cheat a volatile mob boss (Tom Wilkinson, natch) out of 8 million dollars. Of course Foley declines, but then matter.
