Viewer's  Opinion :     Ben Affleck got it right when he said that To the Wonder made Tree of Life look like Transformers.
Tree of Life took us on a deeply personal voyage through memories of childhood and reminded us of that sense of wonderment we get when reflecting on our place in the universe. It provided us with an excuse to reflect more deeply on that sense of wonderment and to sustain it longer than we would otherwise.
To the Wonder is more intimate and takes us on a voyage through romantic love, the anticipation, discovery and tenderness that comes with its beginnings and the joy, frustrations and pain that come with being-in-the-world with someone who is not.
As a more sensual B-side to "The Tree of Life", "To The Wonder" feels like it has much less to say in a much more roundabout way. There is barely a single line of dialogue in the whole movie, instead we get wall-to-wall voice-over which bares the Malick trademark of exposing emotion rather than exposition -- but the memorable sweet innocence of Sissy Spacek, the raspy voice of Landa Manz, or the musings of the soldiers of WWII are weakened by fragmented voice overs by characters whose flimsy definitions makes them hard to emote with. The poignant poetry of "Tree of Life" struck a chord with me early on, whereas here it seemed.
It most certainly was a challenge to get through, but the payoff is very satisfying. It works well as a companion piece to The Tree of Life. Gorgeous cinematography from Lubezki, Kurylenko was absolutely captivating, and McAdams was severely underused. Malick seemed to have edited this down to the bare minimum. Weisz, Sheen, Peet, and Pepper's roles have all been cut from the final edit. Typical Malick.
